Types of incontinence: A reference for product classification and positioning
Questions about care and durability are among the most common searches around reusable absorbent underwear. Questions like ‘can period underwear go in the dryer’, ‘does leakproof underwear smell’ and ‘how long do period pants last’ highlight the textile engineering problems a brand has to solve before launching a reusable absorbent range, because care failures are one of the fastest routes to negative reviews.
This article covers the mechanics of washing and drying absorbent underwear, why many reusable products start to leak after repeated laundering, and how Confitex Technology’s unique composition and construction innovations solve many of the issues.
The machine-washing standard
Consumers are looking for period or incontinence underwear that fits seamlessly with their existing laundry routine. ‘Hand-wash only’, ‘line-dry only’ and ‘wash separately’ are all barriers to purchase and everyday use.
Confitex Technology leakproof absorbent underwear can be hand or machine washed like ordinary laundry. Our standard care instructions for textile products are to rinse in cold water if desired, then turn inside out and wash on a delicate cycle below 40°C/104°F, using standard detergent. Bleach, fabric conditioner, antibacterial sprays and dry cleaning should be avoided: fabric conditioner, in particular, interferes with the absorbent layer’s performance, reducing how much liquid the underwear can hold next time it is worn. Washing inside out helps the water rinse through the absorbent layer thoroughly. This is also the reason we don’t usually stipulate washing our underwear in a delicates bag.
The tumble-dry dilemma
This is a core technical differentiator in the category.
Because absorbent underwear is designed to hold liquid, it takes longer to dry than ordinary underwear – roughly comparable to a thick sports sock. Unfortunately for consumers, many brands of period and incontinence underwear bear ‘line-dry only’ care instructions, which creates a real pain point when they want to dry and reuse their underwear quickly.
This is because the PU waterproofing layer used by many reusable absorbent underwear manufacturers warps and shrinks under heat. A single accidental trip through the dryer can distort the barrier layer, cause leaks and destroy trust. In fact, even with careful air-drying, repeated wash cycles progressively break down this laminate, meaning the underwear’s leakproof performance degrades over its life.
Confitex Technology’s unique waterproofing layer is built specifically to withstand tumble-drying on low heat. Our underwear is independently verified to withstand a minimum of 50 wash-and-dry cycles without reduction in its leakproof performance or deterioration of its construction. Turning the underwear inside out also speeds drying, since the liquid-retaining layer is exposed rather than trapped against the outer layer.
Odour considerations
Some manufacturers choose to add biocides such as silver and nanosilver to their absorbent underwear to allow for a ‘odour-resistant’ claim, but these additives carry their own risks and regulatory restrictions.
At Confitex Technology, we endeavour to minimise the number of chemical additives in our garments. If a mild odour develops in underwear after repeated washing, particularly if it sits damp after washing or isn’t fully dried, this can be addressed with a periodic soak in a solution of three parts water to one part white vinegar for about 30 minutes, followed by a normal wash cycle.
Why this matters for a private label range
Care performance directly affects three things a brand sourcing this category has to manage: return rates, review sentiment and repeat purchase. Poor durability under normal laundering – particularly tumble-drying failure – is one of the most common sources of returns and negative reviews in this category, which is why wash/dry performance is an important manufacturing specification. A brand that can’t tell customers ‘yes, this can go in the dryer’ is at a disadvantage against one that can – both in terms of marketing claims and in actual customer experience throughout the product’s life.
Brands evaluating manufacturing partners for a reusable absorbent range should look for:
- Wash-cycle durability validated by testing, not just marketing claims: Confitex Technology’s period and incontinence underwear is independently verified to retain its leakproof and absorbent performance across 50+ machine wash and tumble dry cycles.
- Construction that tolerates normal consumer laundry behaviour: Consumers often ignore ‘air-dry only’ instructions and throw their underwear in the dryer anyway, leading to product failure and bad reviews. A range that’s built to withstand this puts your brand at an advantage.
- Independent verifications and regulatory compliance: Look for OEKO-TEX Standard 100-certified textiles, alongside ISO 13485 and MDSAP manufacturing compliance and CE marking where applicable for incontinence categories with medical-adjacent claims.

Key takeaways
- Care failures are one of the fastest routes to negative reviews in reusable absorbent underwear, so wash and dry performance should be treated as a core manufacturing specification.
- Look for a manufacturer whose products don’t require specialist or complex care.
- Absorbent underwear takes longer than most underwear to dry, but many brands cannot be tumble dried. This is a major pain point for consumers, so choose a manufacturer whose products are dryer safe.
- When choosing a manufacturing partner, look for wash durability validated by independent testing and appropriate quality certifications.
