Learn what really counts when measuring the performance of reusable absorbent hygiene products

Helga Bjork Jonsdottir, Global Key Account Director at Confitex Technology, speaks at Intertek’s free webinar on 28 October 2026.
Confitex Technology Global Key Account Director Helga Bjork Jonsdottir will share her insights into the challenges and trends shaping period and incontinence underwear performance testing at Intertek’s Building an Iconic Future for Softlines Assurance webinar on 28 October 2026.
The webinar will explore how changing regulations, emerging technologies and evolving supply chain risks are shaping the future of reusable absorbent hygiene products and other softlines – and how businesses can move from reactive to proactive risk management.
Helga will explain how Confitex Technology substantiates the performance of our reusable absorbent hygiene products – and why the evidence behind product claims needs to keep pace as those claims become more specific.
Why credible performance testing matters
When consumers buy reusable period and incontinence products, they expect them to absorb well, resist leaks, stay comfortable and keep working wash after wash. Yet there is no regulated testing regime to support performance and durability claims for reusables.
“Because we are making performance claims in such a sensitive category, we need more than internal confidence,” says Helga. “We need a science-based and independently supported way to substantiate the absorbency performance of our products.”
Confitex Technology has worked with Intertek to establish a testing protocol that establishes a reliable link between laboratory results and real-life performance by measuring how products perform in simulated real-life conditions, including during movement and under bodyweight pressure. Intertek now offers this leakage testing capability at its Hong Kong High-Performance Centre of Excellence to support other brands.
“Verified performance is central to our positioning, and Intertek’s role helps bring scientific rigour and independent assurance to the process,” says Helga. “This is increasingly important as retailers and consumers expect claims to be backed by credible evidence.”
From one-off testing to lifecycle performance
In Helga’s view, the industry is moving beyond one-off tests at launch. Brands will need repeatable methods, ongoing verification and evidence that performance holds up after repeated use, laundering and real consumer wear.
For reusables, that widens what durability means. In softlines, durability has usually meant how a garment looks after washing. For absorbent products, it is also about how they keep working: how much they absorb without leaking, how quickly they absorb and how dry they feel against the skin.
“Reusable products only deliver their full value if they continue to perform over time,” says Helga. “Durability, washability and absorbency are all connected to the sustainability promise.”
